Canada Condemns ISIL’s Claim of Massacre of Iraqi Troops

June 16, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today released the following statement regarding photos posted online depicting hundreds of Iraqi soldiers lying in trenches both before and after being allegedly massacred by ISIL terrorists:

“The release of these disturbing images by the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant [ISIL] is calculated to intimidate and to further inflame regional tensions.

“Canada absolutely condemns ISIL’s brutality and calls for the people and government of Iraq to unite against this terrorist threat and bring those responsible to justice.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of members of the military and civilians killed in this brutal conflict.”

ISIL, formerly known as Al Qaida in Iraq, has been listed as a terrorist group in Canada under the Criminal Code since August of 2012.
