Canada Condemns Assassination of Libyan Human Rights Activist Salwa Bugaighis

June 26, 2014 - The Honourable Deepak Obhrai, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and for International Human Rights, today issued the following statement:

“Canada strongly condemns the assassination in Benghazi of Libyan lawyer Salwa Bugaighis, a prominent human rights activist who helped organize the first protests against Qadhafi. This act is particularly egregious as it comes on the day Libyans elect representatives to their new national legislature, the Council of Representatives.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I extend my condolences to the family and friends of Salwa Bugaighis. Her sacrifices for the sake of advancing democracy in Libya will not be forgotten.

“Canada will continue to support the work of Libyan human rights activists and will work closely with our allies and partners to advance democracy, stability and security for the people of Libya.”
