Baird Disappointed by Lack of Progress on New Government in Iraq
July 1, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird issued the following statement:
“Canada is disappointed that today’s inaugural session of Iraq’s newly elected Council of Representatives was not able to reach an agreement on naming a new speaker.
“We call on parliamentarians to overcome their differences and form a unified and inclusive government in Iraq.
“The stability and security of Iraq depends on its government presenting a united front against terrorist threats. We urge all parliamentarians to participate in the next session scheduled for July 8.”
