Baird Calls for Calm and End to Vigilantism Following Murder of Palestinian Teen

July 7, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:

“Canada remains deeply concerned by the murder of Mohammed Abu Khdeir. A Canadian representative met with his family today to convey our sincere condolences for their loss.

“I also spoke with my Israeli counterpart this morning to discuss the latest situation. While it would be inappropriate to comment on details of the ongoing investigation, we welcome the diligence and determination with which the Israeli authorities are pursuing justice for the victim and his family. We expect the investigations of both this case and that of the murder of three Israeli teens to continue unimpeded.

“Canada calls for a restoration of calm and an end to the cycle of violence and vigilantism. We also urge the new Palestinian government to exercise its authority in Gaza and bring an immediate end to Hamas’s rocket attacks on Israel. The escalation of violence we have seen over the last several days will do nothing to advance the interests of peace or the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people.”
