Baird Comments on Afghan Elections
July 8, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:
“Canada believes that Afghanistan’s next leader must be chosen by the Afghan people through a process that is credible and constitutional.
“Canada is concerned by reports of irregularities in the Afghan election process. These must be thoroughly and transparently adjudicated, while candidates pursue their legal options. There can be no place in Afghanistan for violent threats or attempts to subvert the Afghan constitution.
“The Independent Election Commission (IEC) and the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) are responsible for ensuring that the election process is carried out in a credible, transparent and impartial manner. We have urged the IEC and the IECC to work together with the candidates to find a solution that will address the concerns raised and maintain the credibility of the electoral process and the eventual result.
“Until then, we urge the candidates to refrain from provocative rhetoric, which only acts to destabilize a country that Afghans have fought so hard for in their pursuit of peace, prosperity and democratic rule.”
