Baird Congratulates Indonesians on Presidential Election
July 9, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird issued the following statement on today’s successful presidential election in Indonesia:
“I congratulate Indonesia for its successful presidential election. Canada commends the millions of Indonesians who went to the polls and peacefully exercised their democratic right to vote.
“Canada is proud to share the values of democracy, pluralism and respect for human rights with Indonesia. I look forward to working with the new government to promote these shared values, and to deepening our partnership to the benefit of both countries and the Asia-Pacific region.”
Indonesia is the world’s third most populous democracy. Today’s election is the third time that Indonesians have directly elected their president.
Canada and Indonesia enjoy a wide-ranging bilateral relationship, with substantial and increasing engagement on human rights and development, trade and investment, and peace and security, including countering international terrorism and migrant smuggling.
