Baird Concerned by Escalating Violence in Ukraine

July 14, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:

“Renewed fighting and incursions in eastern Ukraine, and the buildup of Russian military personnel on the Ukrainian border, are of grave concern to Canada.

“It is very clear that these types of aggressive actions and military capabilities are not coming from an independent group of concerned Ukrainian citizens. The Putin regime continues to say one thing in public, while pursuing this sort of reckless and hypocritical behaviour on the ground.

“It is high time for the Putin regime to become part of the solution and not the problem. It can do this by showing good faith in talks with Kyiv, immediately ordering a withdrawal of its troops from the border, stopping the flow of weapons and militants into Ukraine, and calling on these armed thugs to lay down their weapons and renounce violence.

“Canada will continue to work with its partners and allies to put financial and political pressure on those who seek to undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
