Canada Deplores Targeting of Christians in Iraq

July 20, 2014 - The Honourable Deepak Obhrai, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and for International Human Rights, today issued the following statement:

“Canada deplores the continued persecution of Christians in Iraq. The latest ultimatum from the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria [ISIS] threatens Iraqi Christians in Mosul with death unless they convert to Islam, pay a special tax or flee the city.

“We again call on all Iraqi leaders to join together and govern for all Iraqis, regardless of religion, for the sake of the country’s security, democracy and prosperity. This freedom is essential so that all Iraqis, regardless of their religion, can contribute to Iraq’s future without fear of intimidation and violence.”
