Baird Extends Condolences to People of China After Earthquake
August 3, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird issued the following statement:
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of life, injuries and damage that have occurred as a result of the recent earthquake in Yunnan, China.
“On behalf of all Canadians, I express my profound sympathy to the families, friends and loved ones of those killed in today’s tragedy. Canada is deeply concerned for the well-being of those affected by this disaster. We stand in solidarity with the Chinese people during this difficult time.
“Canadian consular officials in Guangzhou are working with Chinese authorities to determine whether any Canadians were injured in the earthquake. Canada stands ready to assist China in responding to this disaster.
“Friends and relatives in Canada seeking information on Canadian citizens believed to be in the affected area should contact the Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa by calling 1-800-387-3124 or 613-996-8885. They may also send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.”
