Canada Welcomes Conviction of Senior Khmer Rouge

August 7, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:

“Canada notes with satisfaction that Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan, both senior surviving leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, have been sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity committed between 1975 and 1977. The sentences were handed down yesterday by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia.

“This measure of justice is long overdue. I hope that it will bring some comfort to the loved ones of those tortured and killed during the Khmer Rouge’s murderous rule, and to all those still haunted by this brutal regime.”
