Minister Baird Meets German Counterpart in New York City
September 20, 2011 - New York City - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird met with Guido Westerwelle, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, at the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City on September 20, 2011.
This was the two ministers' first formal bilateral meeting. They discussed a broad range of issues and confirmed their shared interest in strengthening democracy, human rights and the rule of law around the world.
The pair also discussed the Palestinian unilateral statehood initiative. Canada’s position is that the only solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a negotiated settlement between the two sides, believing that unilateral action is ultimately unhelpful.
