Minister Baird Meets Nepalese Counterpart

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird meets with Nepal's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, at the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly, in New York City on September 22, 2011.
This was the two ministers’ first meeting. They discussed a broad range of issues, including Nepal’s September 18 earthquake, its Comprehensive Peace Agreement and constitutional process, and human rights and the rule of law.
Minister Baird acknowledged the generosity of Nepal in hosting Bhutanese refugees over the past two decades. He also expressed concern about the situation of Tibetan refugees in Nepal. He encouraged Nepal to consider acceding to the UN’s 1951 Refugee Convention.
