Canadian and Libyan Foreign Ministers Meet at UN General Assembly
September 23, 2011 - New York City - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird meets with his Libyan counterpart, Mahmoud Jibril, Chair of the Executive Committee of the National Transitional Council, at the 66th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, September 23, 2011. Canada has played a leadership role in protecting Libyan civilians since the passing of UN resolutions 1970 and 1973.
Canada has eased the economic sanctions imposed on Libya under the United Nations Act in response to the passage of Resolution 2009. This will help support the Libyan people as they begin to rebuild their economy and build for the first time a democratic system based on the rule of law and respect for human rights.
The easing of sanctions will also simplify the return to work of Canadian businesses in Libya.
On September 16, 2011, the United Nations accredited the delegates of the National Transitional Council as official representatives of Libya to the General Assembly.
