Ministers Baird and Flaherty Meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas
January 30, 2012 - Ramallah - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird and Finance Minister Jim Flaherty meet with Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority. The ministers reiterated to President Abbas Canada’s support for the Authority’s continuing governance reforms.
“Canada is committed to implementing its assistance package of $300 million to support the Palestinian Authority’s Reform and Development Plan,” said Baird. “These efforts should help the Palestinian Authority to build the institutions and necessary infrastructure for a viable Palestinian state, one which is the result of an agreement negotiated between the two parties.”
Minister Baird urged President Abbas to make peace, recognize Israel and return to the negotiating table. He also emphasized that unilateral efforts to gain recognition without a negotiated peace agreement with Israel are ultimately unhelpful.
“Palestinians and Israelis deserve free states of their own,” said Baird. “They deserve to live in peace, security and with human dignity. To that end, both must use the responsibility of their freedom for good.”
