May 14, 2012 – Ottawa– Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird welcomes Valerie Amos, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.
Minister Baird and Ms. Amos discussed the international response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis and violence in Syria. Canada has been a leader in mitigating the crisis in Syria by committing up to $7.5 million in humanitarian aid to help the most vulnerable.
Baird reiterated his concern over the continued reports of violence and deaths in Syria.
“It is regrettable that UN Joint Special Envoy Annan’s six-point plan remains unsuccessful, despite its potential,” said Baird. “The international community must redouble its efforts to secure adherence to the six-point plan or explore other diplomatic solutions to the crisis in Syria.”
“We stand with the Syrian people and support their demands for freedom, dignity and a better, brighter future,” said Baird.
