Baird Welcomes Burmese Counterpart
October 3, 2012 - Ottawa - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird meets with Burma’s Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin.
The two ministers discussed the democratic reform efforts of the Burmese government, the human rights situation in Burma and Canada’s plans to open an embassy in the country in the near future.
The visit is the first to Canada by a Burmese government official since Canada suspended most of its economic sanctions against Burma in April 2012 and the first by a Burmese foreign minister since 1969.
On March 8, 2012, Minister Baird made a landmark visit to Burma, marking the first official visit to that country by a Canadian foreign minister.
After years of diplomatic and economic isolation, Burma is ripe with potential. As long as recent democratic reforms continue, Canada will work with Burmese officials bilaterally and through forums like the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to support Burma’s development and to further deepen bilateral relations.
