Baird Lays Wreath at Canadian Peacekeeping Memorial in Cyprus

April 4, 2013 - Nicosia, Cyprus - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird lays a wreath at the Canadian Peacekeeping Memorial in Cyprus.

Canada contributed a battalion-sized contingent of soldiers to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) from 1964 to 1993. During the 29-year deployment, 25,000 Canadian soldiers served through 58 rotations of six months each.

Twenty-eight Canadian soldiers lost their lives during the deployment.

There is currently one Canadian officer assigned to UNFICYP Headquarters in Nicosia.
