Baird Hosts German Counterpart
May 30, 2013 - Ottawa - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird welcomes his German counterpart, Guido Westerwelle, to Ottawa for an official visit and discussions on a wide range of pressing global issues—including Syria, Iran and the fragile global economy.
Canada and Germany are strong partners for freedom, security and prosperity around the world. The two countries cooperate closely on security and defence issues and Germany is a traditional co-sponsor of the Canada-led UN resolution on human rights in Iran.
Canada and Germany have weathered the global economic downturn better than most developed countries. Baird applauded Germany’s leadership through the economic challenges of recent years and expressed Canada’s desire to resolve as soon as possible, and to the benefit of both countries, any remaining issues in a free trade deal between Canada and the European Union.
