Baird Hosts Bahraini Delegation

Baird and Crown Prince of Bahrain Deepen Canada-Bahrain Relations and Cooperation

June 4, 2013 - Ottawa - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird (centre right) is joined by the Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance (far right), His Royal Highness Salman Bin Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa, Crown Prince and First Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain (far left), His Excellency Sheik Khalid bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain (centre left), and other Bahraini government officials for the signing of a tax information exchange agreement (TIEA). The TIEA supports Canada’s fight against international tax evasion and will enable tax authorities in the two countries to exchange information relevant to the administration and enforcement of their respective domestic tax laws.

Today’s meeting in Ottawa comes after Minister Baird’s official visit to the Gulf region kingdom, in April, and signals a bilateral relationship that is on an upward trajectory. Bahraini delegates confirmed that the state-owned airline, Gulf Air, will take delivery of 10 Bombardier jets, produced in Montréal, as part of the airline’s ambitious restructuring plans.

Minister Baird and the Crown Prince also discussed the National Dialogue of Bahrain, an initiative of King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa to promote reform and encourage discussion on the country’s governance. Baird, as he did when in Manama, encouraged the Government of Bahrain to continue to engage with citizens on reforms, rights and the recommendations of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry.
