Baird Tours West Bank’s First Planned City

June 17, 2013 - Rawabi, West Bank - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird visits Rawabi, the West Bank's first planned city.

The vision of Bashar Al-Masri, CEO of Massar International, Rawabi could one day be home to as many as 40,000 people. It features a mix of housing, recreation and cultural facilities and is a model of both sustainable living and positive private sector economic growth. The project, which is entirely privately financed, is already creating jobs and changing lives in a real way: it is helping to grow the middle class and attract international investment to the West Bank.

Baird is on a four-day visit to the Middle East. During his visit to the West Bank, Minister Baird announced an immediate $25-million contribution to support the Palestinian Authority’s development efforts and to further security and prosperity in the West Bank and Gaza. Part of that contribution includes support for the Office of the Quartet Representative, which has a renewed focus on growing the Palestinian economy.
