Baird Welcomes Iraqi Vice President
June 24, 2013 - Ottawa - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird welcomes Khudhair al-Khuzaie, Vice President of Iraq.
Baird signalled that Canada is increasingly concerned by the ongoing ethnic and sectarian tensions in Iraq, and the persistence of deadly terrorist violence. Canada remains confident that Iraq’s leaders—and the Iraqi people—will prevail against the threat of sectarian conflict and shape for themselves a multi-confessional, pluralist future.
The two men also discussed key regional issues, including the ongoing crisis in Syria and the negative influence of Iran on regional and global security. Both of these influences threaten Iraq’s future and the future of an increasingly fragile region.
Canada remains committed to further deepening relations with Iraq—already Canada’s top bilateral trading partner in the Middle East—and the Iraqi people. On April 1, 2013, Minister Baird visited Baghdad and announced the opening of a permanent diplomatic mission there.
