Baird Attends ASEAN Meetings

July 1, 2013 - Bandar Seri Begawan - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird attends the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Post-Ministerial Conference and ASEAN Regional Forum.

Baird will also have a series of bilateral meetings with his counterparts from the Asia-Pacific region, along with key representatives of the business community.

This year marks 36 years of friendship and partnership between Canada and ASEAN. The relationship is more important than ever for Canada’s prosperity and security. In 2012, Canada-ASEAN merchandise trade was valued at $15.8 billion, making ASEAN countries, as a group, Canada’s seventh-largest trading partner. There is more direct foreign investment by Canadian firms in the Southeast Asian region than in China and India combined.

The meetings were part of Baird’s eighth trip to Asia to expand Canada’s ties with Asian powerhouses, project Canadian values and diversify Canada’s trade relations in the Asia-Pacific region.
