Baird Meets Burmese Counterpart

July 1, 2013 - Bandar Seri Begawan - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird meets Wunna Maung Lwin, Burma’s foreign minister.

Canada welcomes the positive developments in Burma over the past two years and encourages Burmese authorities to pursue further reforms. Canada will continue to work with its international and Burmese partners to promote freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law in that country.

Canada is opening an embassy in Burma. It will be operated by Canada’s first-ever resident ambassador to that country.

The meeting was part of Baird’s trip to Asia to expand Canada’s ties with Asian powerhouses, project Canadian values and diversify Canada’s trade relations in the Asia-Pacific region.
