Baird Participates in ASEAN Regional Forum

July 2, 2013, Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird attends the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Regional Forum and attends a working lunch. Participation in this important forum underlines Canada’s active engagement in the Asia-Pacific region.

This year marks 36 years of friendship and partnership between Canada and ASEAN. The relationship is more important than ever for our prosperity and security. In 2012, Canada-ASEAN merchandise trade was valued at $15.8 billion, making ASEAN countries, as a group, Canada’s seventh-largest trading partner. There is more direct foreign investment by Canadian firms in the Southeast Asian region than in China and India combined.

The meeting was part of Baird’s eighth trip to Asia to expand Canada’s ties with Asian powerhouses, project Canadian values and diversify Canada’s trade relations in the Asia-Pacific region.
