Baird Meets New Chinese Counterpart

July 4, 2013 - Beijing - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird congratulates Wang Yi on his appointment as China’s foreign minister.

Baird and Wang underscored Canada’s commitment to strengthening relations with China.

The ministers had a constructive, three-hour meeting on key bilateral issues, including the trade and investment relationship, human rights and governance.

Canada values the deep connections that have developed between the two countries, and the Government of Canada is committed to advancing bilateral cooperation in a range of areas, including trade, investment, education, health and the environment, as well as advancing shared interests in global and regional peace, security and sustainable development.

China is the world’s second-largest economy and has maintained an impressive economic growth rate throughout the global financial crisis.

Baird took the opportunity to invite Foreign Minister Wang to Canada.

The meeting was part of Baird’s eighth trip to Asia to expand Canada’s ties with Asian powerhouses, project Canadian values and diversify Canada’s trade relations in the Asia-Pacific region.
