Minister Baird Meets Nicaragua’s Foreign Affairs Minister to Discuss Development Cooperation and Other Bilateral and Regional Issues

July 29, 2013 - Managua - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird met with Samuel Santos, Nicaragua’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, to discuss a range of bilateral and regional issues.

“Canada has a growing and vibrant trade relationship with Nicaragua, and we continue to work together on regional security issues,” said Baird. “Canada’s development cooperation is also an important part of the bilateral relationship. We have aligned our development efforts in Nicaragua with the priorities of the country, focusing on sustainable economic growth and food security through rural development.

Between 2009 and 2012, Canada contributed more than $46 million for development assistance and humanitarian aid in Nicaragua. Canada has also provided more than $19 million to increase household access to electricity and clean drinking water, train farmers on production techniques, and eliminate school fees to help keep the children of poor families in school.

This is the first visit to Nicaragua by a Canadian foreign affairs minister since 1999.
