Baird Meets with Bartholomew I

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird meets with Bartholomew I, Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch

September 14, 2013 - Istanbul, Turkey - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird (right) meets with Bartholomew I, Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch, to discuss the progress Canada’s Office of Religious Freedom has made since it opened this year.

“The promotion and protection of religious freedom continues to be a priority for our government,” said Baird. “We remain committed to promoting this fundamental Canadian value around the world. Canada is committed to working with institutions, government and civil-society representatives to promote freedom of religion and human rights for all.”

The Office of Religious Freedom was created to promote freedom of religion or belief as a core human right, encourage protection of religious communities and promote Canadian values of pluralism and tolerance around the world. Baird sought Bartholomew I’s advice and counsel prior to the office being established.
