Baird and Minister of State Yelich Welcome Icelandic Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade
September 18, 2013 - Ottawa - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird and the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State (Foreign Affairs and Consular), welcome Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson, Iceland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade.
Mr. Sveinsson visited Canada from September 16 to 18, 2013. The ministers discussed current international affairs and Canada’s chairmanship of the Arctic Council (AC).
This two-day visit provided an important opportunity to build a strong relationship with a new Icelandic government focused on a like-minded agenda of economic prosperity. It also provided an opportunity to discuss Canada’s chairmanship of the AC for 2013-2015, including the promotion of circumpolar economic development, as well as issues such as the global financial crisis.
The recent announcement of the new agreement between WestJet and Icelandair will encourage greater business exchanges and opportunities for both countries.
Canada and Iceland have a relationship that predates the modern era and began more than 1,000 years ago when Icelander Leif Eriksson landed in L’Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland. The positive relationship between Canada and Iceland continues to be influenced by the theme of exploration and discovery.
