Baird Attends Ad Hoc Liaison Committee Meeting

September 25, 2013 - New York City - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird attends the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee meeting during the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly to discuss progress in the Middle East peace process and Palestinian Authority governance capacity building.

“Canada continues to support efforts toward resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and, in particular, supports the strengthening of the Palestinian economy,” said Baird.

“Canada believes that a strong and well-functioning Palestinian Authority is critical to the two-state solution.”

Last week, Foreign Minister of the Palestinian Authority Riad Malki visited Ottawa when Canada announced it would be providing $5 million in support of sustainable economic development in the West Bank through initiatives that help business development, improve economic opportunities and create jobs.

This announcement complemented Canada’s ongoing support of Palestinians to build the institutions and infrastructure necessary for a viable Palestinian state to be established as a result of an agreement negotiated between the parties.

Canada’s statement was delivered by Katherine Verrier-Frechette.
