Baird Meets With Tony Blair to Discuss Middle East Peace Process

October 23, 2013 - Ottawa - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird meets with Tony Blair, Quartet Representative to the Middle East and former British prime minister, to discuss the ongoing Middle East peace process.

Canada supports the important work of the Quartet (the United Nations, the United States, the European Union and Russia) to the Middle East. Canada is convinced of the important role the Office of the Quartet Representative (OQR) can play in developing and implementing the economic track of ongoing peace efforts.

Canada is pleased to be able to support the important work of the OQR in particular, which complements Canada’s significant contributions to reform of the Palestinian security and justice sectors, promote private-sector development and help meet humanitarian needs. In June 2013, Canada announced up to $1.4 million in new support to the OQR.

A strong private sector is key to sustaining economic growth and complements Canada’s work to help the Palestinians build accountable and democratic institutions.

Canada remains committed to a two-state solution reached through a negotiated agreement.
