Baird Meets with Foreign Minister of Romania

March 30, 2014 - Bucharest, Romania - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird meets with Titus Corlăţean, Foreign Minister of Romania. During the meeting, the two ministers discussed opportunities for strengthened bilateral relations between their two countries as well as the current situation in Ukraine.

“The situation in Ukraine presents serious implications for the security and stability of the Euro-Atlantic area as a whole,” said Minister Baird. “Canada highly values its relationship with Romania, which has an important role in the stability of a region that is under clear threat from Russia. Russia’s aggressive actions have not gone, and will not go, unnoticed, and Canada, along with our international partners, will continue to take action.”

Baird also congratulated Corlăţean on the 10th anniversary of Romania’s accession to NATO, highlighting that Canada was the first to ratify Romania’s accession protocols.

“Canada and Romania have a solid relationship, sharing a commitment to promoting democracy, human rights and security around the world, and having served together in a variety of areas, including Afghanistan,” said Baird. “By joining NATO, Romania strengthened its own security as well as that of NATO and the entire Euro-Atlantic region.”
