Baird Meets with Uruguayan Minister of Foreign Affairs
April 11, 2014 - Ottawa, Ontario - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird met with Luis Almagro, Uruguay’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. This is Minister Almagro’s first visit to Ottawa after Minister Baird travelled to meet his counterpart in Montevideo last August. Discussions between the two ministers centred on shared values, human rights and education. The two also discussed current regional affairs, including the role of the Organization of American States and Uruguay’s leadership in Mercosur and UNASUR.
“Uruguay is an important partner for Canada in the Americas. We appreciate its contribution to hemispheric issues such as the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti and Minister Almagro’s participation in the UNASUR mission to Venezuela,” said Baird.
Uruguay was identified as a priority emerging market in Canada’s Global Markets Action Plan. Baird took the opportunity to engage with Minister Almagro on strengthening commercial relations between the two countries.
