Minister Baird Visits Multinational Force & Observers North Camp in Sinai

April 18, 2014 - Cairo, Egypt - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird visits the Multinational Force & Observers (MFO) North Camp in Sinai. Baird was accompanied by Canadian Ambassador to Egypt David Drake and met with Canadian Major General Denis Thompson who took command of the MFO as Force Commander in March 2014.

“Canada supports Egypt’s transition to democracy. We stand with the Egyptian government and people in their efforts to build a stable, inclusive, prosperous and democratic Egypt based on respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law,” said Baird. “Canada sees the role of the MFO as a key element contributing to security and stability in the Sinai and the region.”

The MFO is an independent international organization with peacekeeping responsibilities in the Sinai. Canada currently has 30 Canadian Armed Forces personnel serving at the MFO including the recently appointed force commander. The deployment of Canadian Armed Forces personnel to strategic positions within the MFO is part of Canada’s broader engagement in support of peace efforts in the Middle East.
