Minister Baird Meets with Oman’s Foreign Minister, Promotes Strengthened Relations
April 20, 2014 - Muscat, Oman - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird meets with Yusuf bin Alawi Bin Abdullah, Oman’s Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs. This meeting provided an opportunity for both ministers to discuss regional security and the growing trade relationship between Oman and Canada, and for Canada to reaffirm its interest in cooperation with Oman, including through a Canada-Gulf Cooperation Council Strategic Dialogue.
“Canada welcomes Oman’s unique perspective on issues in the region, including Iran, Syria, Egypt and the Gulf Cooperation Council,” said Baird. “Canada hopes that this visit provides the opportunity to expand upon our existing relationship and deepen the business and investment ties between our two countries.”
During the visit, Baird announced the appointment of an honorary Canadian consul in Oman. Ali Daud will take on this role, supporting Canadian priorities in the region.
Baird has now visited all Gulf Cooperation Council countries, signalling the importance that Canada attributes to the bloc in building prosperity and security.
