Minister Aglukkaq Visits University of Oulu
May 17, 2013 - Oulu, Finland - The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and Minister for the Arctic Council, presents a wall hanging from Arviat, Nunavut, to Anni-Siiri L änsman, Director of the University of Oulu’s Giellagas Institute, which studies and promotes Sami language and culture. Minister Aglukkaq is accompanied by Christopher Shapardanov, Canada’s Ambassador to Finland.
Minister Aglukkaq is in Finland following her visit to Kiruna, Sweden, where she assumed the chairmanship of the Arctic Council for Canada.
In Oulu, Minister Aglukkaq discussed with local officials the outcomes of the Kiruna council meeting and priorities for the Canadian chairmanship.
Meetings with Lauri Lajunen, Rector of the University of Oulu, and Kari Laine, Director of the university’s Thule Institute, revealed potential for collaboration between the institutions and the Arctic Council.
Minister Aglukkaq also visited the Oulu Mining School, where she held discussions with representatives of the local business community and Northern researchers about a long-term approach to mining development in Northern communities.
