Canada Deepens Commercial Ties with Kuwait

August 25, 2013 - The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, during a visit to Kuwait to deepen Canada’s trade and investment ties with that country, today announced that the first meeting of the Canada-Kuwait Joint Committee on Trade and Investment Co-operation will be held this fall. Minister Fast made the announcement during a bilateral working session with Anas Khalid Al-Saleh, Kuwait’s Minister of Commerce and Industry.

“Opening new markets for Canadian exporters creates new jobs and new sources of prosperity for Canadian workers and their families,” said Minister Fast. “Today’s announcement underscores our government’s commitment to further strengthen the Canada-Kuwait partnership as part of the most ambitious trade expansion plan in Canadian history.”

There are many opportunities for Canadian firms in Kuwait in key areas where there is robust Canadian expertise, including oil-field equipment and services, health care and education services, and telecommunications equipment.

“Our government is committed to helping Canadian businesses succeed abroad, which in turn creates jobs and prosperity at home,” added Minister Fast. “That is why we are creating the right conditions for Canadian businesses to compete and win in global markets.”

Yesterday, Minister Fast visited the construction site of a future campus of Algonquin College and officially opened the first Tim Hortons Café and Bake Shop in Kuwait.

Canada-Kuwait merchandise trade was valued at $117.1 million in 2012. Kuwait is a founding member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council; the Gulf region is a priority market for Canada.

Minister Fast is on a five-day visit to Kuwait, Turkey and Saudi Arabia to advance Canadian economic interests.
