Statement on Yemen’s Accession to World Trade Organization

December 4, 2013 – The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, issued today the following statement during at the Ninth World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference in Bali, Indonesia:

“Canada congratulates Yemen on becoming the WTO’s 160th member.

“Canada was a strong supporter of Yemen’s accession to the WTO. Today marks a significant day for our trade relations with that country.

“As part of its accession, Yemen has committed to the rules that apply to all WTO members and has agreed to undertake a series of commitments to further open its markets and accelerate its integration into the world economy.

“Yemen’s membership in the WTO will play an important role in facilitating its continued development by ensuring a more secure and transparent business environment, lower tariffs and improved access for Canadians doing business in Yemen. This will create new opportunities and new sources of prosperity for people in both countries.”
