Minister Fast Highlights Canada-Ukraine Education Cooperation

Supporting various initiatives to foster closer ties with Ukrainian education institutions reinforces Canada’s commitment to Ukraine’s goals of freedom, democracy, peace and prosperity

July 11, 2014 - Kyiv, Ukraine - Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada

The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, today participated in a Canada-Ukraine round table on education cooperation. Minister Fast is leading a Canadian delegation on a three-day trade and development mission to Ukraine to demonstrate Canada’s continued support for the country, a partner in peace and prosperity.

Minister Fast commended the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE), an independent, not-for-profit organization that for more than 20 years has worked with educational institutions in Canada and Ukraine to foster closer ties.

One noteworthy project singled out by the ministers and supported in part with technical advice from CBIE is an experimental school in Kyiv that incorporates best practices in education from around the world. The Novopecherska School for first- to eleventh-grade students opened on July 6, 2014.

Moreover, with support from Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada’s (DFATD’s) development arm, Canadian institutions such as the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology transfer Canadian know-how and experience in labour-market training to foster the development of small and medium-sized enterprises in Ukraine.

Quick Facts

  • Ukraine has been identified as a priority country under Canada’s recently released Global Markets Action Plan, and as a development country of focus under Canada’s Aid Effectiveness Agenda.

“The Canada-Ukraine education partnership continues to grow, fuelled by our strong people-to-people ties. More and more Ukrainians are choosing Canada for study and research, and vice versa. These students and those with whom they interact create lifelong linkages between our two countries to the benefit of Canadians and Ukrainians alike.”
