August 28, 2013 - Jeddah, Saudi Arabia - The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, discusses Algonquin College’s planned expansion into Saudi Arabia with representatives of Algonquin College. The Canadian institution won a bid to operate an English-language college in Saudi Arabia for five years, with an option for another five years. The new college will be a public-private partnership with the country’s education accreditation body.
Starting this September, Algonquin’s Jazan campus will host 750 students in a preparatory-year program, and electrical-engineering-technician and mechanical-technician programs. In the fall of 2014, programming will be expanded to include eight additional programs in business, construction and engineering, with enrolment expected to increase to 2,000. Algonquin has been providing education services in Saudi Arabia for two years. Canada and Saudi Arabia have a long history of cooperation in education, covering many different disciplines.
Algonquin College is accredited by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and is one of the largest and highest-ranking post-secondary colleges of applied arts and technology in Canada. On August 24, 2013, Minister Fast visited Algonquin College’s new site in Kuwait City.
Minister Fast is on a five-day visit to Kuwait, Turkey and Saudi Arabia to advance the interests of Canadian businesses in those countries.
