Minister Yelich Promotes Nuclear Energy Cooperation with China

February 26, 2014 - Guangzhou and Beijing, China - The Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State (Foreign Affairs and Consular) (top photo, fourth from right), meets with representatives of the China General Nuclear Power Group while in Guangzhou and (bottom photo) with Cao Shudong, Vice President of the China National Nuclear Corporation, while in Beijing to support and advance Canadian industry’s interests in the nuclear sector in China.

Canada and China share an interest in promoting and facilitating mutually beneficial bilateral nuclear energy cooperation while creating jobs in Canada and clean, reliable energy in China. In addition, China represents an important and growing market for Canadian uranium.

The China General Nuclear Power Group is a state-owned enterprise focused on the development, construction and operation of nuclear power plants.

The China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) is also state-owned. It is one of China’s two key nuclear corporations. A wholly-owned subsidiary of the CNNC, the Third Qinshan Nuclear Power Co., Ltd., owns and operates two CANDU reactors at the Qinshan site in the eastern coastal province of Zhejiang.

Minister Yelich is visiting Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Beijing from February 23 to 27 to highlight the strong and growing ties between Canada and Hong Kong and China.
