May 19, 2014 - Shanghai, China - The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, and delegates on the trade mission to China meet with Zhang Quan, Director General of the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau, to discuss potential cooperation in China in the area of sustainable technologies.

Sustainable technology was identified under Canada's Global Market Action Plan and as a strategic priority in China’s 12th Five-Year Plan and was also identified as one of the priority sectors for collaboration in the Canada-China Economic Complementarities Study published in August 2012.

In January 2014, Shanghai Mayor Yang Xiong announced that investment in environmental protection in the city would equal 3 percent of Shanghai’s total economic output, which is valued at approximately $390 billion.

Minister Fast is visiting Shanghai, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong from May 18 to 24, 2014, to deepen Canada’s commercial relationships with China.
