Minister Fast Pays His Respects at Holodomor Memorial in Kyiv, Ukraine

July 9, 2014 - Kyiv, Ukraine - The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, on his first site visit in Ukraine, places the traditional remembrance offering of a pot of grain with a candle at the Holodomor Memorial Museum in memory of the Ukrainian men, women and children who died in the catastrophic famine of 1932-33.

In Ukrainian, the term holodomor means “death by starvation.” The Holodomor was perpetrated by the ruthless Stalin regime to stamp out the aspirations of the Ukrainian people for a free and independent country.

In 2008, Canada recognized the Holodomor as an act of genocide and designated the fourth Saturday of every November as a memorial day dedicated to remembering the victims of the Ukrainian famine and genocide.

Minister Fast is leading Canada’s delegation on a three-day trade and development mission to Ukraine to demonstrate Canada’s continued support for the country, as partners in peace and prosperity.
