Canada provides humanitarian assistance in Sudan

May 28, 2013 - Canada is providing emergency relief items to approximately 11,000 internally displaced Sudanese affected by the ongoing conflicts in North and South Kordofan states of Sudan, announced the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation.

"Canada's humanitarian support is a tangible expression of the best of Canadian values," said Minister Fantino. "We are ensuring that the most vulnerable individuals in Sudan are receiving the immediate emergency support they need."

Since April, it is estimated that more than 45,000 individuals have been severely affected by the ongoing conflict in the states of North Kordofan and South Kordofan, resulting in significant civilian displacement to neighbouring states.

With Canada's assistance, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is supporting the Sudanese Red Crescent Society to provide internally displaced Sudanese with non-food items, shelter, emergency health care, and water, sanitation, and hygiene services.

"Canada's humanitarian assistance is helping to address the immediate needs and alleviate the suffering of those affected by the ongoing conflict," said Minister Fantino. "Canada will continue to monitor the situation in the region to ensure humanitarian needs are met."

Canada is a leader in providing humanitarian assistance to vulnerable people in disaster-affected areas of the world. Economic Action Plan 2013 reaffirms Canada's commitment to humanitarian assistance. The new Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development will maintain the mandate to deliver humanitarian assistance and will help achieve greater efficiency, accountability, and focus to continue to improve the lives of people in need around the world.
