Statement from Minister Paradis: In response to violence against polio workers in Pakistan

December 13, 2013

Canada strongly condemns the senseless killings of a polio worker and two policemen in separate attacks in Pakistan today.

Humanitarian, development and security personnel should not have to fear for their lives as they provide critical assistance to the Pakistani people. There are no excuses for such violence against health workers and those who protect them.

Canada has long been a staunch ally in the fight to eradicate polio. And while these attacks make global efforts more difficult, they will not keep us from continuing our work to end this debilitating disease.

On behalf of all Canadians, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed today.

Christian Paradis
Minister of International Development and Minister for La Francophonie
