Minister Paradis invites Canadian businesses to seize opportunities arising from international development

December 5, 2013

MONTRÉAL — Helping the most vulnerable to emerge from poverty and to make progress toward prosperity is central to Canada’s international assistance program. Today, in an address before the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal, the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and Minister for La Francophonie, highlighted Canada’s commitment to stimulating sustainable economic growth in developing countries, and invited Canadian businesses to work with the Government to  seize opportunities and help create global prosperity.

“Eradicating extreme poverty and promoting global prosperity are two sides of the same coin,’’ said Minister Paradis. ‘‘By stimulating the economies of developing countries and by helping them to create an environment favourable to investment, we are helping to increase the well-being of those living in poverty while opening a host of business and marketing opportunities for Canadians.”

Minister Paradis said that the Government of Canada is already strongly committed to measures that promote economic development and the opening up of markets in developing countries.

“In the last Speech from the Throne, our government made a commitment to partner with the private sector to stimulate economic growth in developing countries, and I am making this a priority,” added Minister Paradis.  “I now invite the business community to do the same and, by taking full advantage of opportunities arising from international development, help increase the productivity and well-being of those living in poverty around the world.”

Minister Paradis noted that along with partnership with the private sector, innovation and aid effectiveness form the cornerstone for Canada to be seen as a leader in reducing global poverty.
