Minister Paradis Signs a Cooperation Agreement on International Development with the United Arab Emirates

Canada supports cooperation in fostering economic and social development in developing countries

Today, the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, and Her Excellency Sheikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Emirati Minister of International Cooperation and Development, signed a memorandum of understanding between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Canada on International Development Cooperation, as part of the current Canada-United Arab Emirates Strategic Agenda.

"Canada has world-leading expertise in international development and is committed to working with our partners, such as the United Arab Emirates, making development aid more effective and to explore new and innovative ways to foster economic growth," said Minister Paradis. "Canada’s successful development model is being replicated by our partners, and this memorandum of understanding demonstrates our shared commitment to achieving greater cooperation and greater results for those in need around the world."

The agreement will strengthen Canada-UAE cooperation in fostering economic and social development. It will bring about poverty reduction by supporting sustainable economic growth, strengthening governance, and protecting  human rights.

The Minister and Her Excellency Sheikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al Qasimi signed the agreement following a meeting where they discussed future cooperation between Canada and the UAE in the field of international development. They met on the margins of the Global Partnership High-Level Meeting held in Mexico City on April 15–16, 2014.

  • Canada welcomes the progress made in establishing and developing a wide-ranging Shared Strategic Agenda with the United Arab Emirates, which includes development cooperation as one of its core themes. The Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation was established as a follow-up to the Fourth High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness held in Busan, Korea, in 2011 to sustain political dialogue on issues related to the quality and effectiveness of development cooperation.
