Statement by Minister Fantino: Canada condemns death of International Red Cross and Red Crescent workers

May 1, 2013

"Canada condemns the recent attacks against humanitarian personnel in Syria, Afghanistan and Somalia that have led to the deaths of four workers from the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

"On behalf of all Canadians, I also extend our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the four men who died in their efforts working to alleviate the suffering of others.

"Canada deplores the violent attack on a mobile medical clinic in Afghanistan that resulted in the deaths of two Afghan Red Crescent Society workers. Medical facilities should not be targeted but rather protected by all.

"Canada further deplores the death of a Syrian Arab Red Crescent worker, who was working at a Red Crescent warehouse in Aleppo, Syria, when it was hit with mortar fire, as well as the death of a Somali staff member of the Turkish Red Crescent Society killed by a car bomb in Mogadishu, Somalia."
