Statement by Minister Fantino: Canada stands with the people of Pakistan in their efforts to eradicate polio and urges the protection of polio workers

May 28, 2013

"Continued attacks on health workers helping to vaccinate children in Pakistan are senseless and wrong.

"On behalf of all Canadians, I extend our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the polio worker who was killed. I also wish for a speedy recovery of the worker who was wounded.

"Canada stands with the Pakistani people in condemning this cowardly attack. We urge the government, as well as religious and community leaders, to continue promoting polio vaccination efforts in their country and to assist in providing a safe environment for health workers and those that protect them.

"Pakistan is just one of three countries, along with Nigeria and Afghanistan, where polio remains endemic. Canada has pledged significant support over the next six years to help ensure that we end polio."
