March 5, 2012 - As part of the international La Francophonie Month, the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) (La Francophonie), met today with representatives of francophone associations of Newfoundland and Labrador.
“I was impressed by the efforts francophones are making to protect the French language and ensure its vitality in the province,” said Minister of State Valcourt. “Their efforts have been fruitful. Today, their children can grow up speaking French and attending school in their native language. This is a fine example of perseverance and cooperation.”
While visiting Grands-Vents school, Minister Valcourt met with representatives of the Association communautaire francophone de Saint-Jean [francophone community association of Saint-Jean], the Fédération des francophones de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador [francophone federation of Newfoundland and Labrador], the Conseil scolaire francophone provincial de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador [francophone provincial school board of Newfoundland and Labrador], the Réseau de développement économique et d’employabilité de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador [economic and employability development network of Newfoundland and Labrador], the newspaper Le Gaboteur and the Fédération des parents francophones de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador [francophone parents federation of Newfoundland and Labrador]. Together, they discussed better ways to promote the use of French in their communities.
