March 20, 2012 - On the occasion of the International Day of La Francophonie, the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) (La Francophonie), announced an additional financial contribution from the federal government to New Brunswick for its participation in the activities of the International Organisation of La Francophonie.
“As a francophone from New Brunswick and minister for La Francophonie, it gives me great pleasure to take part in today’s announcement. As you know, in Canada, the French language is more than just a means of communication. It is an integral part of francophones’ history, identity and daily life,” said Minister Valcourt. “It is important to celebrate La Francophonie, because the French language allows us to create bonds not only with our fellow citizens, but with francophones and francophiles throughout the world.
“Canada is proud to be a founding member of the International Organisation of La Francophonie and remains very attached to this organization,” said Minister Valcourt. “We are delighted to celebrate this year’s International Day of La Francophonie in New Brunswick.”
Canada’s additional contribution of $250,000 is aimed at supporting the Government of New Brunswick’s participation in the activities and institutions of the international francophone community, as well as its multilateral cooperation with members of that community.
“By augmenting New Brunswick’s financial resources, we wish to emphasize the importance the Government of Canada places on ensuring that the province’s francophone and Acadian communities are able to carve out a place for themselves in the international francophone community,” said Minister Valcourt.
As a member of the International Organization of La Francophonie, Canada supports a number of organizations, such as the TV5Monde television network and the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie [University Agency of La Francophonie].
